My Design in Publication: Clean Room #13

Clean Room #13 is out today, and it's proven to have saved me from complete and utter misery. The pride of having my work published is helping me get through today. Indeed, despite being a horror comic, reality has proven to be far worse.

Created and written by the legend that is Gail Simone, and expertly drawn by Walter Geovani and colorist Quinton Winter, this issue features a brand new look for our main character, the world's most fashionable charismatic cult-leader, Astrid, designed by me! If you recall my Clean Room inspired Collection, you'll remember this cape coat:

She looks so perfect I could cry...again.

UNPOPULAR (?) OPINION

Much of "geek fashion" today involves very little actual design. While it's true that it's come a long way, and we're seeing an increase in efforts, the average piece is this: the image of a character plastered on to something, or an ill-conceived and costumey reproduction of the character's outfit.*

I always make an effort to go as far as I can with my ideas. To not only design a collection inspired by a character, but to actually design FOR the character, or a similar customer base. In this case: career women who want to be able to transition from day to evening. I'm proud to be able to say that it finally paid off; and I can't wait to show you all what comes next.

Today's a great day for retail therapy. Go get you some Clean Room.

*Mind you I'm talking about the majority of apparel priced under $100. Ever so often there are some truly inspired collections by luxury designers. Several of them featured on this very blog.

Valentino X Goop: Wonder Woman

The Valentino Super H and Star-Studded Collections are now in stores. Suddenly our tax returns don't look that impressive.

I previously blogged about The Star Studded capsule collection, a Wonder Woman inspired collab with Spider Gwen Paltrow's obscenely indulgent Goop Market pop-up. Well, everyone is now welcome to shop the full line, which includes a few extra pieces like a studded ballet flat, a signature of the label, and THIS STAR PRINTED DRESS WITH STUDDED LEATHER COLLAR OMG!!!

#ArtinMotion: Selly's UK Trip

TRAVEL AND STYLE HIGHLIGHTS FEATURING REDBUBBLE!

Just before I left for my trip, I packed some choice accessories. It seems I'm not the greatest at packing light (I am so, so sorry to all my hosts while abroad, for my stupidly heavy suitcase.) But the pieces with the biggest impact to my overall look each day, were actually the lightest. That's all thanks to the fine people at Redbubble and their gorgeous Art in Motion campaign: a new womens street style line, showcasing the work of some truly brilliant independent artists.

When I look back at one of my earliest blog posts featuring Redbubble, I feel that both this blog and the company have evolved by leaps and bounds, this latest collection being a perfect example of that.

Redbubble reached out to me about showcasing some pieces from their new collection. I saw my epic trip as the perfect opportunity to do just that. I wouldn't blog about something I didn't love, and it was love at first sight when I saw these pieces. The "Wings" butterfly pouch by Cassia and "Peacocks" scarf by Andrea Lauren--in addition to being stunning-- really resonated with me emotionally.

I felt that the butterflies represent the many facets of my personality, and were symbolic of my flying abroad, going on this journey, socializing all over the place. Bonus: The artist, Cassia, is in fact based in the UK!

My being a bag lady, I thought I'd prefer the larger pouch, but the smaller size not only ended up able to hold everything I needed : Passport, cash, phone, mirror, lipstick... even shades (!!); but the small scale also made it much more suitable for evening.

My first time ever in Sheffield. Good thing the guide to Sheffield fits perfectly into my pouch! You can grab yourself a guide --and a great cup of coffee-- at Cafe 9. You can even catch some live music there. Wednesdays you can also grab an amazing personal pie from Nether Edge Pizza.

The peacocks were also symbolic. I took their representation a step further when I wore the scarf out to tea and cake at the famed Maison Bertaux . The scarf and the place were me paying homage to The Girl at Midnight. A beautiful new YA Fantasy novel by the brilliant, violet haired Melissa Grey.

In a book about warring races of bird (Avicen) and dragon (Drakarin) people, one of the standout characters is the peacock feathered, Jasper. And this renowned French Patisserie in the heart of London--a location frequented by other leading characters, including the book's heroine, served as the perfect backdrop. One of many gorgeous scenes that played well against the accessories with their gorgeous, bright color palettes and whimsical motifs.

Introducing SlashCode: The Brand That Geekdom Needs

On my never-ending quest to find examples of designers bridging the gap between the geek and the chic, imagine my delight when the mountain came to Muhammad. That mountain is SlashCode a new premium brand after my own heart. model_SlashCode_02

Here's the story from cofounder Linda:

"SlashCode was created by my partner Kevin and myself because we are Geek ourselves. We LOVE manga, comics, video games, sci-fi, sci-fantasy, RPG, cosplay … But apart from the beloved T-shirt with the huge super hero logo, we couldn’t find a geek and chic fashion alternative The kind we could wear anytime, anywhere : at work, for a romantic diner, for a corporate event …

So we created SlashCode. Our designs are inspired by Geek Culture icons : the ones we grew up with and some more recent ones. Our scarves are made of the finest fabrics and we pay attention to all the details : designs. packaging, printing … "

Attention indeed! UPDATE: When you look at each scarf, have a look at some of the incredible details close-up!) These scarves are gorgeous and are available in 3 sizes with 3-4 models exclusive to each size, all in a light cotton blend.

Why do we need SlashCode? Because this brand isn't just about making geek chic. In fact, the term is so overused that it's  come to describe a too wide range of product--much of which isn't very chic at all. (I'm keeping it real, people). Instead SC is about elevating geek to something more. Never mind making geek chic. This is about taking our beloved culture and fandoms and interpreting them with a level of elegance and sophistication via a product that is both versatile and affordable. I'm not wearing a t-shirt to the opera. EVER. (And FYI, you shouldn't either) But I would wrap one of these around me.

The scarves are available to pre-order via the brand's indiegogo campaign : I highly recommend you go ahead and get one of each.

The delivery is scheduled for January 2015 and meanwhile the buying experience will include videos and news. That means that you, the customer will literally see the birth of your scarf.

Oh and just in time for the holidays, if you're strapped for cash and feeling lucky, you'll have an opportunity to make one yours via this blog. That's right people, I'm giving a SlashCode scarf away!  Enter to win now: SO EXCITE!

NOTE: Go and show your support for the brand on their site. If they don't get the funding they need, these scarves won't happen, so support geeky affordable luxury and fund SlashCode today!
