Greenery: A Mood Board

So I'm working on a swimwear collection. I spent a good bit of time doing research and collecting visuals and prints. How could i not be inspired by Pantone's color of the year? I'm obsessed with green! And I think we're all longing for a calming escape from the noise. As my wallet is void of greenery at the moment, I'm opting for a vacation through design. I think I'm going to have a lot of fun with this What do you think?

Carolina Herrera, my role model and my mentor (how many people can say that?!), is celebrating 35 years of fashion tonight, and just became the recipient of the Women's Leadership Award at the Lincoln Center Corporate Fund gala in her honor. 

I wanted to take a moment to honor her myself, by sharing with you, the words of wisdom she imparted on our senior Sportswear class at FIT. Full disclosure, this video is not the best (that's totally me going, "mhmm," over and over in the background.) but even now, I get emotional remembering that moment. My everything icon addresses a group of students, and I was-- to quote a certain musical-- in, "the room where it happened."

My Design in Publication: Clean Room #13

Clean Room #13 is out today, and it's proven to have saved me from complete and utter misery. The pride of having my work published is helping me get through today. Indeed, despite being a horror comic, reality has proven to be far worse. 

Created and written by the legend that is Gail Simone, and expertly drawn by Walter Geovani and colorist Quinton Winter, this issue features a brand new look for our main character, the world's most fashionable charismatic cult-leader, Astrid, designed by me! If you recall my Clean Room inspired Collection, you'll remember this cape coat:

UNPOPULAR (?) OPINION

Much of "geek fashion" today involves very little actual design. While it's true that it's come a long way, and we're seeing an increase in efforts, the average piece is this: the image of a character plastered on to something, or an ill-conceived and costumey reproduction of the character's outfit.* 

I always make an effort to go as far as I can with my ideas. To not only design a collection inspired by a character, but to actually design FOR the character, or a similar customer base. In this case: career women who want to be able to transition from day to evening. I'm proud to be able to say that it finally paid off; and I can't wait to show you all what comes next. 

Today's a great day for retail therapy. Go get you some Clean Room.

*Mind you I'm talking about the majority of apparel priced under $100. Ever so often there are some truly inspired collections by luxury designers. Several of them featured on this very blog.

Some of you got an advanced preview after I tweeted it out yesterday. I've become obsessed with Clean Room and it's central figure, Astrid. I can thank Gail Simone's brilliant concept and story-telling, Jon-Davis Hunt's character design and artwork, and Jenny Frison's hauntingly gorgeous cover art-- in which Astrid bears a striking resemblance to real life queen of style, Cate Blanchett (c'mon, you see it too)-- for that.  

 This is what that obsession has manifested itself into. A seasonless (as that is the direction fashion is going in) workwear collection that aims to help you channel the confidence of your inner psychopathic cult leader with exceptional taste.*

*People with exceptional taste also drink Earl Grey and read Clean Room. The latest issue is out today!
